Will Learning To Detox Your Body Enhance Your Well Being

Tuesday 28 July 2009 @ 3:38 am

For as long as I can remember I’ve always been lucky with my health. I very rarely got ill, and can’t remember the last time I had a cold or virus of any kind - at least nothing that struck for longer than a few hours. So it was quite alarming when I realized I was becoming very lethargic and out of energy, and I was even finding it hard to get up in the morning. I’d been to see the doctor on many occasions, and had undergone several test, but they all came back negatve.

A friend of mine, who also happened to be a physiotherapist, intimated that I was in need of a natural detox, and put some effort into learning to detox your body and how my eating habits may be affecting my health. I didn’t know the first thing about detoxing, so figured it was a worthy investment of my time to at least check it out, and why so many alternative and complementary health practitioners advocate doing a detox and suggest getting started with the 7 day detox diet so avidly.

Something else she recommended I try was a foot detox. I now use a foot spa about twice a week, but as a suitable alternative, the foot detox patches can work just as well - but doing it this way you miss out on the relaxing foot massage at the same time

There are some very simple things you can do to help detox your body.

Lots of water and herbal teas

One of the most important things you need to is drink lots of water while you are following a detox diet because the water will help your body excrete toxins from your system. Drinking plenty of water also has other health benefits like promoting regular bowel movements, improves concentration, and helps reduce the signs of aging by plumping up your skin. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water each day (about 2 liters), and a good bit more in hot weather or on your exercise days.

As a rough guide, aim to drink an extra half liter of water for every hour you exercise. Choose still mineral water, or tap water that has been filtered, or boiled and then cooled. Ideally drink water that is at room temperature. Feel free to substitute herbal teas if you can’t face all that water - loose leaf is better than tea bags as it hasn’t been processed as much. Green tea, horsetail, camomile and roibosch (or redbush) are especially great in a detox as their hidden ingredients help boost the detox process. Roibosch (Redbush) tea has other health benefits too as it is very high in OPC antioxidants.

Do You Need To Go Organic

You do not need to switch to a totally organic diet on a detox diet, because organic is usually much more expensive, but a little organic produce will go a long way to getting you started.

Don’t panic if you can’t find organic foods in your area. It’s more important that you eat plentiful amounts of fresh foods regardless of them being organic or not, instead of eating too few of them. However, there are some good reasons for eating organic food on a healthy detox diet.

The use of artificial chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers are not allowed when growing organic foods, so they have very little or no potentially toxic man made chemicals. It’s also a very controversial subject as there is evidence that the accumulation of these pesticides may be related to a lot of the serious health issues we face today.

There is a lot less processing of organic produce on its journey to your kitchen. Ultimately this means organic foods not genetically modified and are free from hydrogenated fats and artificial additives. And you may notice that organic foods also taste better and have much deeper flavors.

Enabling and Reasons Why Many Recovering Alcoholics Return to Drinking

Monday 27 July 2009 @ 5:38 pm

It is fascinating to bring up something that family members who have been adversely affected by the alcoholism of another family member obviously do not understand. It appears that by protecting the alcohol dependent person with falsehoods and deceitfulness to those outside the family, these well-intentioned family members have in reality created a situation that makes it easier for the alcoholic to persevere and press forward with his or her harmful, destructive existence.

To be sure, rather than helping the alcohol addicted individual and themselves, these family members have in fact become enablers who have mistakenly helped deteriorate the alcohol addicted person’s drinking problem even more.

The Likelihood of a Relapse is Real

Another key alcohol dependency issue concerns alcohol relapses.  Relapses take place when an alcohol addicted person has effectively gone through alcoholism rehab and then returns to drinking a number of weeks or months later.  At first thought, this predicament seems contradictory to commonsensical thinking and looks so doubtful that it forces an individual to wonder why anyone who has lived through the awfulness of alcohol dependency can return to drinking a short while after successful alcohol treatment and in turn after achieving sobriety.  There are, of course, many feasible reasons for this.

It should be noted, then again that alcohol addiction research that has centered on the enduring consequences of alcoholism has demonstrated-proven that long after the alcohol dependent individual has stopped his or her drinking, key modifications in the way in which the alcohol dependent person’s brain functions are still present. As a result, all a recovering alcohol dependent individual has to do to involve himself or herself in actions that correspond with the modifications that have occurred in the brain is to begin drinking once again.

The Necessity for A Major Lifestyle Transformation

There are other reasons why numerous recovering alcohol addicted individuals return to drinking a few weeks or a few months after attaining sobriety. In accordance to the alcoholism research literature, to make a successful recovery, the alcohol addicted person needs new ways of reacting and thinking in order to deal more effectively with difficult alcohol-related situations that will take place.

Issues such as returning to the same alcohol addictive atmosphere or to the same geographic location; interacting once again with friends from the time when the alcoholic was drinking excessively; or familiar songs, smells, or activities—all of these circumstances can elicit memories that can prompt psychological tension or push hot buttons that influence the recovering alcohol dependent individual to engage in excessive drinking once again. Unfortunately, all of these circumstances may not only counteract enduring sobriety for the alcohol dependent person but they can also lead to relapse and therefore circumvent one’s sobriety.

Summary

In an attempt to “protect” the family alcohol addicted person, family members can in point of fact cause inadvertent damage by enabling the harmful drinking behavior of the alcohol addicted person.

The substance abuse research literature confirms the fact that most people who successfully complete alcohol treatment go through at least one relapse. Alcohol dependent persons and their family members need to know this so that they do not get defeated or overwhelmed when a relapse occurs.

Fortunately, participation in support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous and follow-up therapy and education have resulted in more productive, enduring alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction rehab outcomes, have helped diminish alcohol relapses, and have helped recovering alcohol addicted individuals achieve ongoing alcohol recovery.

Why You Need to Discuss Heart Disease With Your Physician

Saturday 25 July 2009 @ 11:34 pm

A critical first step in dealing with heart disease is to learn to talk to your doctor about your questions and worries. You’re not alone when it comes to difficulties in talking to a medical practitioner about your health concerns. But when it comes to heart wellness no question should be left unanswered.

Sometimes people hope that the answers to their questions will come out in the process of being examined instead of asking them point blank. Physicians don’t always have as much time as they would like with each patient due to their demanding schedules and long waiting lists. In particular, women need to voice their concerns, since heart disease isn’t as readily associated with women, even though they are equally at risk.

Questions that you should ask your doctor include what your blood pressure is recorded as and what is normal for you. You need to know what your blood cholesterol and glucose levels are and if they are considered normal. Ask your doctor which tests are suggested for people of your age, both currently and in the future.

If medication has been prescribed, do not hesitate to ask if there are side effects, what the drug is supposed to do, and whether you should take other medication, even over the counter, with your prescribed medicine. Ascertain whether you’ll be on the medication for an indefinite period of time or if it’s a temporary treatment. If recommended by your physician, you’ll need to take further tests to monitor the effects of your medication. The liver is one organ that most doctors consider testing when a patient is on certain medicines.

If you always get home and remember something that you forgot to ask the doctor, make a “need to know” list and take it with you on your next visit. Do not forget to bring with you the medications that you are presently on as well. If you have more than one health care provider, this is a must.

Add to your list any surgeries or relevant illness that you have had and been treated for in the past few years. This should be recorded in your file so your physician is up to speed on any potential problems.

In conclusion, if you think that you may forget what you physician has told you, you can always write it down or record the appointment for later referral. Don’t hesitate to get a second opinion if you’re not comfortable with the advice and treatment recommendations of your doctor.

You Should Understand Normal Blood Glucose Level To Remain In Control

Friday 24 July 2009 @ 11:06 am

Main resource of power for the body is glucose. When you take rich carbohydrates food it gets transformed into sugar and travels through the bloodstream. The cells apply this glucose to bring out different body actions. The hormone which regulate the amount of glucose in blood is called insulin. Insulin makes sure that standard blood glucose level is maintained which is profitable for the body. Level of anything if goes high or low can be reason for complex health issues or some diseases.

Normal blood glucose levels

To be able to keep glucose levels under control you need to know what the normal blood glucose level is. In the morning usually glucose levels are at lowest point before your first food intake. They go up only after your any food intake. However, they should be in the marginal range of 80mg/dL to 150mg/dL (i.e. 3.9 to 8.3mmol/L). After meals the level can increase temporarily to 150mg/dL.

Though, if you have constant blood glucose levels less than 70mg/dL it is a sign of low blood sugar or hypoglycemia. If your levels go beyond 150 it may be warning you of hyperglycemia or high blood sugar or diabetes. You must consult the doctors to verify the results as high blood glucose does not always signify diabetes. Blood glucose level if is very high or very low can cause harm to your body. The effect of high level is nerve damage, kidney damage and very low level effects in mental functions and loss of consciousness.

Blood glucose test and their normal ranges

To understand whether your blood glucose levels are within the range, you can undergo some tests that would give you the actual measures.

* Fasting blood glucose test: This test is taken 8 hours after fasting. The normal blood glucose level for this test is advised at 110mg/dL or 6.1mmol/L. There is confirmation of diabetes in you if it is more than 126mg/dL after two following blood tests.
After two hours you take meal or snack this postprandial test is conducted. The standard level should be below 120mg/dL or 6.6mmol/L The level frequently comes below to under 100mg/dL or 5.The test shows 5 among non diabetics after two hours.
This random test random blood glucose test as the name suggest can be taken at any time. The standard range should not go beyond 200 mg/do or 11.1mmol/L1mmol/L.

Oral glucose tolerance test helps to measure your body’s reaction to sugar. Firstly measuring your fasting blood sugar and then drinking a sugary solution is the process. The glucose level is measured again after two hours. The level for this test also must be below 140mg/dL or 7.8mmol/L.
Glycated hemoglobin (A1C) test is a useful test to measure your control on diabetes over a certain time. This is mirror of your average blood sugar for the past three to five weeks. Hemoglobin that is sugar covered it calculates its percentage. The standard levels are 4 to 6 percent in non diabetics and lower than 7 percent in diabetics. During pregnancy the level must be lower than 6 percent.

Blood glucose levels in children also may be high or low. It is up to the parents to be aware of the normal blood glucose levels for their children so that they do not suffer from the ill effects of high or low blood glucose levels. It is essential for normal people as well as diabetics to maintain blood glucose levels in the normal range for a healthier life.

Natural Immune System Boosters: Why Should We Bother?

Thursday 23 July 2009 @ 6:17 pm

Traditionally, medicine has been seen as an aid to fighting the bugs and repairing the bones of our day to day lifestyle. But today the focus has changed.  Today lifestyle choices are impacting on our health, dramatically altering our life span.

With our modern day obsession for acquiring more real estate , hotter autos, more exotic vacations we are giving up quality for quantity and what suffers the most is our own wellbeing. The environment we’ve created is literally sapping our own natural resources and we are not replacing these depleted reserves. Any form of natural immune system boosters is being ignored. The frightening consequence is, our longer term life expectancy is critically shortened.

Increasingly the same conditions are chipping away at our health; obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, respiratory problems and cancer. They are all on the increase. We seem to have blind faith that medical science will ‘cure all’..

Undoubtedly medicinal development has made huge strides in helping us regain our health but unfortunately this success is almost counter productive.  Today we seem to want to pass over the responsibility of our health to anyone but ourselves. “Let science sort it out”.

We are failing to take responsibility for our own actions and aspirations.  it’s this attitude that has led to an astonishing  level of expectation by patients in the antibiotic treatments , and putting doctors  are under unrealistic pressures to conjure up immediate results.

Although the results are not as instantaneous as conventional medication the use of an herbal antibiotic should be considered. The distinct  advantages of this type of medication is that they are designed to focus upon the ailment whilst at the same timeboosting the body’s immune system. As an example we can look at a tiredness remedy that also provides immune system boosters.

Herbs as a medicinal source are too easy to pass off in the critical food chain to support and strengthen the immune system. Yes, in the main their reputation is anecdotal obtained after substantial use by our forefathers. But their continued use has shown herbs are capable of improving the immune system as well as combating many of the ailments to which we are susceptible.

Herbs need not be an added expense; you can grow them yourself on a windowsill or in a small garden. You can dry them yourself; then you’ve got the added benifit of herbs all year around. Even if you cannot grow them yourself there are a number of quality suppliers which will be able to provide herbs at a costyou find acceptable. There’s the convenience of herbal teas, the reputation of Chinese medicinal herbs or perhaps you want to use fresh herbs in your daily cook pot? Then again there’s the homeopathic choice.

You are welcome to review some of the more common uses of our popular herbs at Herb and Herbal Matters.

Hemroid, Hemroids,Hemorrhoids,Hemmorhoids

Wednesday 22 July 2009 @ 6:37 am

No matter how you spell it….hemmorhoids hurt! Many people are embarrased to talk about the subject so they suffer quietly, not really knowing where to turn or what to do.

What are hemmorhoids? Hemorrhoids are abnormally swollen veins in the rectum and anus. They are much like varicose veins you might see on a person’s legs.

Internal hemorrhoids occur inside the rectum. Due to the lack of pain receptors in that particular area, they usually will not cause pain. They may bleed when irritated. Internal hemorrhoids can lead to prolapsed or strangulated hemorrhoids if left untreated.

External hemorrhoids occur outside of the anal canal. They can be very painful, and can be accompanied by swelling and irritation. If the vein ruptures and a blood clot develops, the hemorrhoid becomes what is known as a thrombosed hemorrhoid.

The causes of hemorrhoids may include constipation, chronic diarrhea, pregnancy, postponing bowel movements, and fiber-deprived diet. It is believed that genetics may also contribute to hemmorhoid development. Hard stools, caused by a lack of hydration, can cause irritation to the hemmorhoids. This can also be caused by drinking too much of a diuretic liquid such as coffee or cokes. An excess of lactic acid in the stool can cause irritation. This can be caused by over consumption of milk products. By reducing the amount of milk products such as cheese you may reduce the irritation and bring relief.

Additional factors that can cause hemeroids, for those with a genetic predisposition, are obesity and a sedentary lifestyle.

In most cases hemeroids should be treated non-surgically but in extreme cases surgical procedures may be neccessary.

The non surgical options for treatment of hemeroids are designed to relieve the symptoms of hemeroids.

They include:

Tub baths or Sitz baths several times a day in plain, warm water for about 10 minutes

Application of a hemorroidal cream

Suppositories placed in the rectum

The surgical options for removal of hemorrhoids include:

Rubber band ligation - A rubber band is placed around the base of the hemorrhoid inside the rectum. Cutting off blood circulation causes the hemmorhoid to wither away within days.

Sclerotherapy - A chemical solution injected around the blood vessel shrinks the hemorrhoid.

Infrared coagulation - Hemorrhoidal tissue is burned with a special device.

Hemorrhoidectomy - In rare cases, severe internal or external hemorrhoids may be removed by surgery known as hemorrhoidectomy.

Preventing the recurrence of hemorrhoids will require relieving the pressure and straining of constipation. Doctors will often recommend increasing fiber and fluids in the diet. The proper amount of fiber in your diet and drinking six to eight glasses of non alcoholic fluids will result in softer, bulkier stools. A softer stool lessens the pressure on hemorrhoids caused by straining. To prevent the hemorrhoids from protruding you should try to eliminate straining.
